Synopsis

When the Tribune runs an eighteen-word brief on a missing longshoreman, Nels Sørensen — a Danish immigrant and dockworker — starts counting. The missing man is the first of many, and no one else is counting. Sørensen traces the disappearances through confessionals, comrades, and pamphlets, discovering a pattern that leads to the Oakland docks, where something is taking workers and leaving no bodies behind.
