Chapter 4 — The Count
Thursday. The discussion group.
I went.

There were nine of us, seated in a loose circle in the back room of the Brush Street warehouse. Cruz presided from no special position — just a chair like the others, though somehow the arrangement naturally oriented toward him. A river knows where the channel runs.
The topic was betrayal. What it means to be betrayed by the systems you trusted — your employer, your government, your church. And what it means to betray yourself by continuing to trust them.
The men spoke one at a time. A carpenter talked about his foreman taking credit for his work. A railroad man talked about the strike of '16 and the promises that were made and broken. A young man, barely twenty, talked about his father — a veteran, like me — who'd come home from France and found that the country he'd fought for didn't have a place for him.
I listened. I didn't speak. That was the arrangement — visitors observed, and Cruz, in his gentle way, made it clear that observation was participation enough.
But Cruz watched me. Not constantly — he was too skilled for that. He watched me in the spaces between speakers, in the pauses where the room held its breath. He watched the way I watched the others, and I could see him reading me the way I read crime scenes: assembling evidence, drawing conclusions, filing what he learned for later use.
After forty minutes, he turned to me.
"Mr. Sørensen. You've been generous with your silence. Would you share what you're thinking?"
"I'm thinking about a man named George Calloway. He came to two of your meetings. Then he disappeared."
The room tightened. Not in fear — in attention. Nine pairs of eyes on me, and behind the attention, something I couldn't name. Not hostility. Readiness.
Cruz didn't flinch. "Mr. Calloway chose to stop attending. I told you this."
"You called his wife three weeks ago. She told you he was working nights. But he'd been missing since January. So either she lied to you, or you're lying to me about when you called."
A long silence. The kind that has weight.
Cruz studied me. I saw the calculation happen — not the calculation of a liar caught, but the calculation of a chess player who's been asked why he moved a piece.
"Neither," he said. "I called in January. She told me he was working nights. I called again three weeks ago to follow up, and she told me the same thing. I assumed he was simply busy."
"Did you try to reach him directly?"
"He didn't leave a forwarding address."
"None of them do. George Calloway, Frank Perrault, Thomas Nakamura, Danny Orozco. Four men, all waterfront, all your demographic, two with confirmed contact with the Communion, all missing. And now Ruby Washington's brother — a member — missing too."
"Marcus Washington is not missing. He's living in communal housing we provide for members who need stability. He visits his mother regularly."
"He hasn't seen his sister in three months."
"Family relationships are complicated, Mr. Sørensen. Marcus chose to focus on his personal development. His sister may not approve, but it's his choice to make."
I believed him. That was the hell of it. Every word he said was plausible. Every explanation was reasonable. And the pattern was still there — five men, connected to the Communion, all gone from the lives they'd had before.
"I'd like to talk to Marcus Washington."
"He's not available tonight. But I can arrange a meeting, if you'd like."
"I would."
"Next week. I'll send word through Ruby — she trusts you, and I want her to feel comfortable about this." He paused. "Mr. Sørensen, I want to be clear about something. The Communion has nothing to hide. We are a fellowship of men helping men. If men who pass through our doors later choose to move on, that is their right. We don't own them."
"You recruit from the desperate."
"We welcome the desperate. There's a difference."
"Is there?"
He smiled. The Jesuit smile — warm, knowledgeable, a little sad. "You tell me, Mr. Sørensen. You're a reporter for the Oakland Tribune. You write stories about men who've been failed by their employers, their government, their city. You do it for a living, and the living barely covers your rent. You came to this discussion group on your evening off, in the cold, when you could have been home. Why?"
"Because I'm investigating your organization."
"No. You're investigating it now. You came the first time because you were curious. You came the second time because something I said about listening resonated with you. And you'll come again, not because of the investigation, but because this is the first time in months that you've been in a room where someone asked you what you were thinking and actually wanted to hear the answer."
He was right. The son of a bitch was right.
"Goodnight, Mr. Sørensen."

I walked home through Temescal in a fog that wasn't weather. The streets were dark — Oakland doesn't waste light on neighborhoods where the taxpayers can't complain. My boarding house was three blocks from MacArthur, and I knew every crack in every sidewalk, every window that was lit at this hour, every alley that was safe and every one that wasn't.
I was halfway home when I realized someone was following me.
Not behind me — that's amateur hour. Parallel. One block over, keeping pace. I could hear the footsteps when the wind was right, and when the wind shifted, I could see a shape in the gaps between buildings.
I didn't run. Running from something in Oakland after dark is how you end up in a story on page nine. Instead, I turned down a side street I knew was a dead end — a narrow alley between two warehouses with a streetlight at the far end that had been broken for months. If the follower wanted to close the distance, they'd have to do it in the dark.
The footsteps stopped.
Then a voice — low, calm, familiar.
"It's Tanner. Don't run."
I didn't run. I also didn't relax.
Bill Tanner stepped out of the shadow of a doorway. In the thin light from the distant streetlamp, his face was unreadable.
"We need to talk."
"Talk."
"Cruz is going to offer you something. A deeper involvement. A role in the Communion — maybe a staff position, maybe just regular attendance. He's going to frame it as an opportunity."
"And it's not?"
"It's real. Everything he offers is real. The community, the purpose, the belonging — it's not a trick. It's not bait. It's genuinely what it appears to be."
"But?"
Bill was quiet for a long time. The fog curled around us. Somewhere distant, a ship's horn sounded across the bay.
"But it comes with a price. And the price is higher than you think."
"What price?"
He looked at me, and in the dark, I could see something I hadn't seen in the discussion group or at the Friday meeting. Not certainty. Doubt. The old Bill Tanner, peeking through the cracks.
"I can't tell you. Not because I won't — because I genuinely don't know how to explain it to someone who hasn't—" He stopped himself. "Just don't say yes. Whatever Cruz offers, don't say yes."
"Bill, what happened to you?"
"I became something better." His voice was steady, but his hands weren't. "That's what makes it hard. It *is* better. I'm stronger, clearer, more focused than I've ever been. I can do things I couldn't do before. I see things I couldn't see. And I can't tell you whether the price is worth it because I'm not sure I remember what I was like before I paid it."
He turned to go.
"Bill."
He stopped.
"The missing men. George Calloway and the others. What happened to them?"
He didn't turn around. "They moved on."
"Where?"
"Somewhere better."
"Like you?"
A long pause. Then, over his shoulder: "I hope not."
He walked into the fog and was gone.

I stood in the alley for a long time after that. The fog settled around me. My breath made clouds. The ship's horn sounded again, mournful and distant, like something calling across water to someone who wasn't coming back.
*A man who can't tell you whether the price was worth it because he doesn't remember what he was like before he paid it.*
I went home. I didn't sleep. I sat at the typewriter and wrote everything down — the meeting, Cruz's deflections, Bill's warning, the walk through Temescal, the fog.
I didn't understand what I was writing. But I knew it was the most important story I'd ever covered.
And I knew, with the cold certainty that comes from seeing a pattern too clearly to unsee it, that I was already deeper in it than I'd intended to go.
