Chapter 1 — The Missing
The first one was George Calloway, no relation to the longshoreman organizer, which the Tribune's copy desk found confusing enough that they ran his name as "George C." in the brief. Eighteen words on page nine. Docks. Missing. No foul play suspected.
I wrote those eighteen words. I didn't believe them.

You learn things on the crime beat that they don't teach at journalism school. You learn that the police blotter is a first draft, not a record. You learn that "no foul play suspected" usually means "we're not looking." You learn that disappearances in West Oakland get eighteen words and disappearances in Piedmont get banner headlines, and the difference between the two has nothing to do with the quality of the mystery and everything to do with the quality of the address.
I'd been on the beat for fourteen months. Before that, I was in France. Before that, I was a copy boy with a limp and ambitions. The Tribune hired me because I could type and because Mordecai Cole, the managing editor, had a soft spot for veterans — his boy was at the Marne. I stayed because I was good at it. Not the writing — anyone can write. The noticing. The pattern recognition that comes from spending your nights in precinct houses and your mornings reading coroner's reports with yesterday's coffee.
George Calloway was a dockworker. Forty-three, married, three kids. Worked the Southern Pacific freight terminal for eleven years. Left for his shift on a Tuesday morning in January and never came home.
The police talked to his wife. They talked to his foreman. They talked to the bartender at Kelly's, where George drank every Friday. They concluded that George had probably left on his own — "domestic difficulties," the detective wrote, which was code for "we're not going to look for a dockworker who probably ran out on his family."
I talked to his wife too. Mae Calloway was thirty-eight and looked fifty. She lived in a company house on 7th Street with the three kids and a boarder who helped with rent. She showed me George's side of the closet — still full. His work boots by the door. His shaving kit on the bathroom shelf.
"George didn't leave," she said. Not angry. Not crying. Just certain, the way people are certain about things they know in their bones. "He'd have taken his boots. A man doesn't leave his boots."
She was right. A dockworker's boots are the most expensive thing he owns. George Calloway did not run away from home.

The second one was Frank Perrault. Sailor, Canadian, in port for three days. Last seen at a bar on the waterfront on February 3rd. Room at the Maritime Hotel still had his luggage. His ship left without him.
The third was Thomas Nakamura. Not Japanese — the name was a adoption, apparently. Born Thomas Nilsen in Minnesota. Worked the cannery row. Reported missing by his landlady on February 9th.
The fourth was Danny Orozco. Day laborer, also from the cannery. February 14th. Valentine's Day. The police didn't even file a report — the desk sergeant told me Orozco was "probably drunk somewhere."
I wrote all of them up. None of them ran. Cole said the Tribune wasn't in the business of tracking transients. "Men leave, Nels. It's not news."
"Four men in six weeks. All waterfront. All between thirty and forty-five. All steady — no drinking problems, no criminal records, no reason to leave."
"Coincidence."
"Four isn't a coincidence. Four is a pattern."
Cole looked at me over his glasses. He was fifty, going grey, and he'd been doing this job long enough to know the difference between a reporter chasing a story and a reporter chasing trouble. I could see him deciding which one I was.
"Write it up," he said finally. "Bring me the story. If it's good, I'll run it past the publisher."
That was Cole's way of saying no without saying no. The publisher was Harold Fenn, a man whose business interests included a shipping line that operated out of the same port where the men were disappearing. Fenn wasn't going to run a story that suggested the waterfront was unsafe.
But I wrote it up anyway. That's what reporters do.

The story I brought Cole was sixteen hundred words. It laid out the pattern: four men, six weeks, waterfront, all physically capable (not the type to wander off or get lost), all with local ties strong enough that leaving would require effort. It mentioned that the Oakland Police Department had not opened a single investigation. It quoted Mae Calloway: "He'd have taken his boots."
Cole read it twice. Then he put it down and took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.
"Nels. This is good reporting."
"Thank you."
"I can't run it."
"I know."
"Fenn—"
"I know."
He handed the story back to me. "Keep digging. But quietly. And Nels — be careful. If there's a pattern, there's a cause. And causes don't like being found."
I took the story back to my desk and put it in the drawer where I keep the things the Tribune won't print. The drawer was getting full.

That night I went to Kelly's. Not for the missing men — for the sources. Kelly's was where the dockworkers drank, and dockworkers saw everything. They just didn't talk to reporters.
I'd been cultivating a source at the shipyard for two months. Ruby Washington. She was a welder at Moore — one of the first women hired during the war, and one of the few who'd stayed when the men came back. She was better than most of them and she knew it, which made her angry in a specific, useful way.
I found her at the bar, nursing a beer and drawing weld lines on a napkin — something she did when she was thinking.
"Washington."
"Sørensen." She didn't look up. "You buying?"
"If you're talking."
She looked up then. "What about?"
"Men going missing."
Something shifted behind her eyes. Not surprise — something else. Recognition.
"You noticed too," I said.
"Sit down."

Ruby told me four things that night. Three of them I could use. One of them I couldn't explain.
**One:** The disappearances weren't limited to the four I'd found. Ruby knew of at least two more — men who'd been reported to the precinct but never made the blotter. "The desk sergeant's got a system," she said. "Anything that looks like transient trouble goes in the round file."
**Two:** All the missing men had something in common beyond the waterfront. They'd all been, at one point or another, what Ruby called "down enough to take help." Behind on rent. Drinking too much. Fighting with wives. The kind of trouble that makes a man desperate enough to accept a hand from anyone offering.
**Three:** There was a new organization in Oakland. Not a union, not a church, not a fraternal lodge. Something called the Communion of the Open Hand. They held meetings in a converted warehouse on Brush Street. They offered community, purpose, and — according to the flyers Ruby had seen — "a new way forward for men who've been left behind."
**Four:** Ruby's brother, Marcus, had joined the Communion three months ago.
She hadn't seen him since.

"What do you mean, you haven't seen him?"
"I mean he stopped coming home. He's got a room somewhere — he sent Ma a letter saying he was fine, not to worry. But he won't say where he is, and when I went to the Brush Street address, a man told me they don't give out member information."
"Did the man give you a name?"
"He gave me a card." She reached into her jacket and pulled out a small white card. Embossed lettering. *The Communion of the Open Hand. "Strength Through Fellowship."* An address on Brush Street and a telephone number.
"And your brother? Was he different before he stopped coming home?"
Ruby turned her beer glass in a slow circle. "Yeah. He was different. Stronger. More — certain. Like he'd figured something out that the rest of us hadn't. He stopped complaining about work. Stopped drinking. Started talking about the Communion like it was—" She stopped.
"Like it was what?"
"Like it was church. But not church. Like it was something he believed in more than church."
I pocketed the card. "I'll look into it."
"Sørensen." She caught my arm. "Marcus is a good man. He's not transient. He's not a drunk. He just got dealt a bad hand and someone offered him a new one. Whatever you find — don't make him look like a fool."
"I'm not in the business of making people look like fools, Washington."
"Then what business are you in?"
I finished my beer and left without answering, because I wasn't sure I knew anymore.
