Synopsis

Sal Marconi, Ventrue primogen of San Francisco, attends a dinner at Giovanni's โ€” the city's hidden Kindred gambling house. Hosted by Giovanni patriarch Lorenzo Foscari, the evening revolves around an auction of the 1906 earthquake debt ledger: a document containing the identities of every Kindred who died in the quake. Marconi navigates a room full of predators โ€” Toreador, Tremere, Giovanni โ€” where the real commodity isn't money but leverage, and silence is the most expensive thing on offer.

Author's Note

Written over three days, May 7โ€“9. This is the most Venetian of the San Francisco stories โ€” a dinner party at Giovanni's where the real auction is for silence. Lorenzo Foscari emerges as the most fully realized Giovanni antagonist yet: warm, erudite, utterly monstrous. Sal Marconi's choice at the end โ€” to buy a debt he has no obligation to honor โ€” isn't about the ledger. It's about what kind of witness he wants to be. Completed at ~56K words across 9 chapters.
